2023 PMTM Holiday Viewing Guide – December 6

Ricky Morton in Concert (JCP Super Towns on the SuperStation: February 7, 1987)

Oh, boy! Consider this a truly special Christmas treat.

In early 1987, The Rock ‘n’ Roll Express had new entrance music – “Boogie Woogie Dance Hall” – which featured Ricky Morton on vocals. In an effort to hype the theme, Jim Crockett Promotions had Morton do a live performance of it (preceded by his rendition of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Gimme Three Steps) in Raleigh, NC, as part of its Super Towns on the SuperStation TBS special on February 7.

I cannot fully express just how much joy this brings me. This 8 minutes feels like an eternity and the song was about as uncool as it gets. Just extremely dated and not at all hip.

Independent wrestler and promoter Beau James joined the Between the Sheets podcast in 2021 to talk about this. He drops some great tidbits, including Morton first being told about the performance THAT DAY (and thinking it was a rib) and that the band playing with Morton is Confederate Railroad, then known as the Tennessee Hat Band. (Between the Sheets Ep. #288: February 3-9, 1987 with Beau James)

As a stocking stuffer, here’s a commercial from the same period for the Rock ‘n’ Roll Express’ fan club, featuring “Boogie Woogie Dance Hall.”
